Hobo nickels? I've never heard that term but it's very funny. I still have one of those but it probably wouldn't be appropriate to post on this forum. It has a picture of a naked lady. Heads is her front. Tails is her behind. With the inscription heads I win. Tails you lose. I was recovering from hernia surgery and one my goofy buddies gave it to me while still in the hospital. I laughed so hard I thought I was going to rip open the stitches.

Mike F, there really are original Hobo nickels, done by hobos during the 30's and 40's. most often looking like these. They are quite collectable and expensive for a real one. Here, have a laugh

Quote: These are the modern ones but are really works of art. Yes they are works of art, they are not and in my opinion should not be called Hobo nickels.

Condor and nfine, . Only reason I'm calling these "hobo" is that's the registered name/company that makes most of the posted pix. I've looked for a real one for a long time!

I love admiring hobo nickels, but I have yet to actually purchase one.

I asked a dealer about this at the last coin show, but how can anyone verify that a hobo nickel is original or contemporary? The original ones go for a lot of money, so...? Also, these "potty" Trade dollars seem to be all over the shows around here. First, what is the attraction, second, how can you tell that is original either?

Andrew99, The fake trades and even fake busts/sitting libs don't ring right. Weights and materials are wrong. Take a portable scale and a cheat sheet w/weights written down to the shows. Most fakes can be seen by the casting look/sound, they are cast copies, not struck. I first look at the stars, are they even or out of shape, not just worn, Then other details pop out as being off, letters/numbers, the arrows or feathers. On my Sitting Lib copy the font is different on date 18 is correct 65 is modern' After a while it becomes obvious, trust your gut 1st impression. Don't be afraid to walk away if in doubt. I've purchased know fakes/copies just for the purpose of studying the fake. The attraction is to study or use as a cheap substitute fo a 7070 type set. Those top 3 would cost $3.1 Million!
