I bought this last week for $35 on ebay. A lovely coin, if it's genuine. Too good to be true? When a "but-it-now" like this comes up there's no time for research, just a snap decision, at least for a relatively inexpensive coin like this. The buyer emailed if he had sold this too cheap as he knew nothing about coins. He had sold it Jan 19 for $230 but said the buyer had returned it because it was cleaned, so he lowered the asking price. It weighs 5.3 grams, Coin Digest shows the weight should be 5 grams. If it's a fake, they don't get much better.

You won't find any 20c piece, in any decent shape, for under $200. The buyer may have returned it because it was a fake. Does it stick to a magnet?

Counterfeit for sure. The only Twnety Cent Piece that has strike issues is the 1875-CC. This one has fuzzy devices and weakness in the "United States of American" where there shouldn't be. The weakness in the centers is not indicative of wear or a weak stike made weaker by wear. It was made from trasfer dies or molds from the real thing, and not very good transfer dies. A genuine coin has more crispness to it. I don't have a heavily circulated Twenty Cent Piece, but here is a Mint State 1876 and an 1875-S in EF. 1875-S

The coin doesn't stick to a magnet, however there is no ring when dropped on a hard surface. Sounds like a nickel. My only other 20 cent piece is an 1875-s ICG-VG08 - Details - Cleaned, I bought on ebay a few years ago for $22, so you can get the real thing at cheap prices if you look long enough. The seller takes returns so back it goes!

Glad the seller is refunding your purchase. Many, many, many counterfeit coins are on ebay.

The past week there has been a flurry of fake Morgan dollars on ebay, the rarest dates at 1/10 normal price. They all look the same. It appears someone hacks into an inactive account and lists them and even has multiples. People are buying them before they are taken down. A great way to wreck our hobby.

It's fake because it has a grainy look.
