Rarity and census reports are an important tool to collectors and numismatic scholars today. Ever wonder how far back it was that rarity figures started to be noticed? Here's an interesting report that was put out in 1858, right at the end of the Large cent and Half Cent era, and at the time that many consider to be the birth of collecting.

Not a very complicated table here. A coin was considered either common, rare, or very rare.

Not too surprisingly the 1822 half eagle was listed as very rare in the report above. Even in 1858 they knew how elusive it was.

Things were so much different back then. The 1809 dime is listed as common, when today it's an R4.

Very interesting report. It would be a good addition to any
collectors library.

I was looking for mention to the "C" and "D" mint small gold.

Back then most collectors didn't pay any attention to mintmarks, they strictly collected by date. Interest in mintmarks didn't start to grow until Augustus Heaton published his monograph on them in 1893.
