A nice XF Vicky that has been cleaned and polished. Was it just varnish that was on it or was there other stuff? What did you use to get it off? I love Vickies.

You have now reduced it to the status of "harshly cleaned".
Unless it is some very desirable variety it is now worth about half the $7US that you paid.
The rule of thumb "do not clean coins" cannot be overstated.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

If you think you have a brass 1859, simply because of the weight... I suggest that you keep hunting...

4.29 is well within the tolerance for a brand new, just off the press, Vicky(4.54) in 1859. Just the act of polishing it would have removed part of the weight it had when struck. You can not tell, by weight, anything about the coin ... other than it has been cleaned and polished.

Thanks Dorado..That's important to know..

Best not to do that to any other coins as it reduces all that are polished to scrap value as a collectible numismatic item..

Thanks Devlec for your recommandation .

Iam a funny kind of collector ...I collect coins ,not for the monetary aspect ,I am the type * for my eyes* I like to see the beauty ,shine , very deep details..etc etc
Very hard to explain ....I like to make all kinds of experiments to bring back ...that we all call Patina ...
I found many coins *in very bad shape * this is the reason why ..

Warning

Those pictures are only for people with open minds.... about my own research , and I am very proud of this experience.

The coin in this post was cleaned 10 years ago ..was sealed in and air-tight container ...Now is the time *for oxidation * We will see .
