I believe this is in the fine to very fine range. What do you think and is it as scarce as the KM price would indicate
?

Nice coin you have there! Overall, it looks quite worn; it might just make VF-20, but I would be closer to F-15 on it.

Almost F.

I would expect more detail on the hair and some detail on the shield on the reverse for F.

Thanks for the grading opinions. This will be a tough one for me to upgrade.

Pertinax, you're comparing this coin with a totally different type.

According to grading instructions for these 5 Mark coins, the grid structure of the shield on the small eagle has to be recognizable. That's the case here which is why I'd go for VF-.

@worldnumis: Lucky you. This is one of 2 coins that are missing in my collection of Prussian silver coins from 1874 to 1915. And indeed, getting this type in a XF or better condition is going to cost you around 1k or more...

Potsdam==Thanks for your comments. I probably won't upgrade my type set, which is still missing the 1915 Drei Mark and the rare gold piece, for completion. I was happy to obtain this piece from my LCS for $100 several years ago. I like your site and notice you are missing a scarce 50pf piece which I have in my reggular German type collection. I will post it for a grade and any comments.

That 50 Pf. coin you've posted is amazing. But getting this one here for only 100 $ is also pretty amazing. I'm always watching these on local auctions and in this condition they often fetch 300 € or more. Anyway, I'll probably continue with purchasing the rather common gold coins from Prussia until I'll save up to buy the Wilhelm II. 1888 types...

It is a moderately scarce coin, and there is quite a lot of demand for it.
I sold mine for 350 euros a few years ago, and it was not as nice as yours.

I would grade yours example as almost VF, but many would call it full VF (also in Germany - ss or sehr schön, as the cris-cross design on the eagles's breast is fully visible).

Great find!
