This is just a thread to let out a bit of steam. Steam built up by ebay sellers who claim a coin is "nicely colored" or "naturally toned" when quite the opposite. I'll start with
This.
and
this.

The IHC may get questionable color at a TPG company, but the LWC looks 100% genuine toned to me. A lot of those old wheats have a blueish tone to them.

Lens filters and light sources do wonders! It may just enhance the nasty toning going on!

Used to buy wire from a Great Southern wire co., really cheap ****, wonder if this is an offshoot startup?

The IHC would likely be QC'd by a TPG but the LWC is righteous in my opinion.
Rest in Peace

Great Southern has a decidedly mixed reputation here:

I would stay away from the IHC but the LWC is attractive to me.

seems counter productive to discount an enormous supply source because of a tiny percentage of questionable sellers/items
(especially when as a buyer you are protected from just about everything).

The 1925 Lincoln looks OK.

GSC is a questionable seller with a reputation for selling cracked-out TPG details slab coins. I've met them at a coin show, nobody was buying their coins. They were massively over-priced and of questionable condition. They never returned to that show.

I've found GSC does a bit of photoshoping to their coins. I got a plan 28 Peace dollar from them that had environmental damage (PVC), and quite a bit of it, but the pictures showed none. They promptly refunded me and gave me a generic excuse. Every coin I've gotten from there has been cleaned as well, but that ones a bit more my fault since at the time I had no idea how to tell the difference between cleaned and uncleaned coins. I stay away from them now-a-days.

I do not understand while people have such a problem with Great Southern Coins. They warn you that you a bidding on a raw coin with only a guaranty of genuine.

From the IHC listing.

Quote:
1890 Indian Head penny, Great Color, Choice BU++ ** Free Shipping!

Please Read Before You Bid

You are bidding on a RAW Coin.

We guarantee AUTHENTICITY ONLY!

We do not offer grades on raw coins, and we do not guarantee grades on raw coins. If you are looking for certified coins, we offer a wide selection of PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG certified coins.

If you are bidding on raw coins, we STRONGLY RECOMMMEND that you have knowledge of the coin industry, coin pricing, and coin grading before you bid.

To ensure customer satisfaction, we offer a 30 day unconditional return policy. Returns are not accepted after 30 days.

They have over 164,000 e-bay transactions with a 99.9 rating. They buy a lot and sell a lot of stuff.

Every coin dealer in the history of coin dealing has bought and sold problem coins.

Every couple of weeks someone posts a thread like this; standing on their soap box pounding their chest, shouting 'I am too smart to buy from them but all the poor shmoos are buying this seller's awful coins.'

If you don't like what you see, just move on.
