I bought this 1955 quarter at a Flea Market in Largo, on
closer inspection, it has some reverse die cracks and faded
legends with indications of late die state. See pictures
and all comments welcome. Seeing no marks but hard to say
if Gem BU is an accurate grade.

Appears to be noticeable ticks on hair bun and shoulder, plus field ticks here and there. I'd say 64.

At MS65 it needs to be pictured outside the holder so that dust particles are not pictured as well, so that grade can be confirmed.
There may be scratches in the clear mylar of the 2x2, not on the coin, which show up here. Mylar tends to be electrostatic, and attracts dust particles.

I do see a few minor dents in the portrait, so not gem BU.
Nice luster, but that can be quite obvious on grades of other coins as low as AU50.

This coin has no wear, so has to be some sort of MS grade.
The dents on the eyebrow, neck shoulder and hair suggest MS62 or 3 to me.

Reverse with these often grades a little higher than the obverse, because there many more high points in the design, which together, tend to protect the reverse better than the obverse.

As I understand it, TPGraders take the lowest graded side as the stated grade for the whole coin.

Die cracks make it a little more interesting.

Many thanks for the opinions, 63 or 64 sounds about right.
Great coin to have with die cracks.

That's a nice looking coin, I like LDS coins a lot. I am not quarter guy but I think that coins closer to 65/66 judging by the luster, lack of contact marks and residue. I think the obverse high points are weak due to the strike. It also has GREAT fields.

Looks like you can take pretty good pictures, take your coins out of the 2x2 and air dust them off for pictures. I think there's a lot of dust on your mylar.
