I am thinking this is a gouge and not the kind of break which makes a "BIE" type. What do you think?

Its a die gouge, the BIE is where the upright part of the E has broken off causing the appearance of extra letter. Seems to have happened a lot in the early/mid 50's, all mints.

The area between the letters is raised on the die its that raised area chipping off the die that forms the BIE errors

Would be a cool BIE, but I am leaning toward a lamination problem. Similar stuff below LIBERTY near rim is part of that conclusion.

I'm not sure what exactly to call it but it's not a BIE (LII). I see what tropicalbats is mentioning. Can you show a pic that includes more of the rim area below LIBERTY?

Thanks for your help. slamnbass, your explanation is helpful. I was trying to put the words together to say that, but my senility was getting in the way. I will work on additional photos - but it will be in the am.

I appreciate you all!

This looks like coin contact. It looks incuse from what I can see. A die gouge, chip or crack would be raised. This looks incuse from the image provided if we are taling about the area next to the 'L' on LIBERTY.

Sometimes when I go away from a picture then come back to it I can see it better. The spot your arrow is pointing too now looks like pushed up metal to me from some kind of hit it took like coop said.i think I see raised metal on both sides of the hit

Sorry to bother everyone! Please disregard this post!

I have determined that this is glue or some similar substance!
