I realize this is an extremely common coin for which whether a specimen is authentic or not hardly matters in terms of value, so my bringing this up ought to be considered merely something of a technical exercise. The example on the right is to my eye not atypical for what is seen for this reign. The one on the left is slightly undersized, the characters notably "off" in form, and in general is just more crudely rendered. While it'd seem a virtually profitless venture to fake such, I know that that doesn't preclude it having been done anyway. Also, although I recognize this has no bearing on the question of either being genuine or not, I'll mention that both these coins came out of the same older collection.

The coin on the left definitely looks in crummier shape. Most noticeable in the background fields.

At first I might attribute it to different regions having different materials to work with or standards but it appears both have the same mintmark?

It is still possible they were made in different times - when times were good they used good alloys and made full size coins and when times were bad they turned out a worse product.

Overall given the variation in size and workmanship I don't think it's abnormal.

At a glance I think it's low quality but not fake.

Interested to hear any other ideas.

@luckycuss, in the "guess which ones are the fake Chinese coins" threads that we have had over in the ancients section of CCF I have proven myself to be worse than random chance at pointing out fakes. With that said, I can tell you that some of my cast cash have the same rough background as your lefthand coin. In my Hartill, there are plenty of coins which are illustrated with similarly poor workmanship on the characters. Furthermore, there are many varieties shown in Hartill which have slightly oversized or undersized sketches. My assumption, and hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will weigh in, is that the pics of all these minor varieties are real-size and therefore the cast cash coins of each emperor are not all perfectly the same diameter.

I usually stick my foot in my mouth on this subject, but the size determines the denomination, 1 Cash, 5, cash and 10 cash. Try this site: http://www.calgarycoin.com/referenc...chinaid3.htm
