At least that's my impression of these, likely some humor here as well, although my rudimentary translation skills will undoubtedly limit my appreciation of that aspect.

I should warn you about getting into Notgeld! I now have 1000s. There are so many different types that it is a bit overwhelming. Some of the themes are very dark, others are blatantly rascist.

I can see how it easily could come to that, but I'm trying to be very selective and buy only those that really stand out to me, and eschew the run of the mill types. Even under that constraint, I wouldn't be surprised if someday I have many hundreds of them, and I can't imagine anyone could ever have them all.

Since you bring it up, here's an exemplar of that from the group I just acquired.

I have pretty much got rid of all my duplicates, otherwise I might have put them up for sale here.

If you don't know this already, most of them are still in Germany and that is where you can get the best deals, especially for bulk lots. Although bulk is probably not what you are after, Germany is the place to easily get specific sets.

As you note, the overall quantity of such extant, even after almost a century has elapsed, appears to remain enormous, even on this side of the Atlantic. That's amazing, really - consider how much that had been stashed away must've been destroyed by bombings and ground combat in Germany during the Second World War. I'd also comment that crisp, uncircualted specimens are hardly exceptional. That's partly a function of their limited use as "emergency money" but also can be attributed to the paper quality being generally not terrible, very little in the way of foolscap, newsprint, or the like. My last remark would be that the printing, both in terms of the plate art and multiplicity of colors, ia also generally rather better than you might expect. So especially when there's contextual content, and given the incredible diversity, collecting relatively inexpensive notgeld becomes an extremely appealing proposition.
