I have a few coins I want to submit for grading, and curious to hear your experiences with NGC. In particular, I'm like to hear your advice on submitting "raw" proof coins. I have a particularly rare proof coin in a 2x2 that I want to get slabbed right away.

I've read the NGC may charge to remove the coin from its 2x2, but I'm not particularly excited about transferring this coin to a "PVC-free flip" as they recommend. It seems there are many possibilities for the coin to incur damage during this process. What happens if leave a fingerprint? Will NGC clean that or remove dust mites from the 2x2-encased coin?

Perhaps I'm worrying myself silly here, but this coin has a potential max mintage of 3,000 so I don't want to take any chances. Thanks!

Hi Kurt,
I've only sent one raw proof in (to PCGS) and that was after I cracked it out of an NGC slab. I don't think you should have much trouble taking your proof out of the 2X2 as long as you are careful. I'd use a regular staple remover to take out all the staples before opening the 2X2 and (of course) do everything over a soft clean cloth. Cotton gloves would be nice but are not mandatory IMO unless your hands get shaky!

I ordered a submission kit from ANACS that included 100 nice flips plus small polyethylene bags. You put the coin in the bag, fold it over, then slide it into the pocket on the flip. The bag protects the coin from abrasion when loading and unloading the flip.

Incidentally, my proof (a 1914 Barber half) was graded PR-64 in the NGC plastic. PCGS had refused to cross it over at the same grade, but I was so sure it was at least a 64 I cracked it out and submitted it raw. This time PCGS decided it was a PR-64 Cameo!

OK, you asked for it! One 1914 Barber Half, formerly in an NGC PR-64 slab, rejected for crossover by PCGS, then cracked out, re-submitted raw, and graded by PCGS as PR-64 CAM.

This is a great looking 64 although the cameo is always hard to tell from photos. Your story makes me think that PCGS does not keep track of what an individual has submitted to them before -- otherwise they should suspect it was the same coin as from the NGC. It is also an example of ing out a coin has a higher chance of success than a crossover. Great examples, Jaobler, thanks for the experience.

The graders are supposed to be blinded to the indentity of a submitter
