I came across this quarter this morning and was wondering if I found an error. On the obverse side of the Washington quarter in the word LIBERTY it appears to me that there is doubling on the letters going towards the 12 o'clock direction of the coin. The weight is 5.5 grams. What do you all think?

I'm by far not an expert,But I believe that is from a coin machine. A counter or something along those lines.

Maybe from worn die, if you look at the area behind Washington's head you see a raised area that appears as the die starts to wear, But I could be wrong, you see it a lot on the mid 80"s Lincolns

On the LIBERTY, note the devices are normal overall size. They have a bit of grease on the die inside the devices unevenly. This prevents the center part of the devices to form, but allowing the full devices at the top of the devices near the rim. Probably the die was wiped with a cloth and that is what cause the spread of the grease. They intend to remove the grease wiping the die down, but spread it unevenly on the die.

Note on the simulation the die can see partly affected or unevenly affected. It is just depending on the amount of grease and where it landed on the die. This prevent the normal die design to form, or alters the devices that are affected.

The area you mentioned behind the head looks like the die was showing some abrasion reducing the fields a bit on that area. This made a low spot on the die and now it looks like that area is raised on the coin. There is also a bit of a halo around the bust area. This leaves a ring around the bust. This one isn't all that strong, but enough to show me that the die was heavily polished.

Thank you for the explanation. It amazes me how much goes into the minting process and grease can cause errors and malformations.
