Being 57 years of age and seeing that I'm probably right in the mix of the average age of the coin collector, I thought it would be interesting to go back in time and discuss our favourite coin shops when we were young.
These are a few in the Toronto and surrounding areas from the 60's and 70's.
1. Arnie's coin shop in the Agincourt Mall.
2. of course the ever popular Arcade, which back in those days did a booming stamp business too.
3. Silver Dollar Reg on Queen street.
4. Simpson's coin counter in the downtown store and also in Fairview mall.
5. early Sunday monthly shows at the St' Lawrence market, upstairs on the ancient squeaky wooden floor.
5. and I vaguely remember a (Frank) Rosen's coin shop on College St? Edited by doubleeagle59 03/21/2017 2:19 pm

A coin shop in Fairview mall!? If only it was like that today :( being in my low 20s, looks like I missed a time I would have loved to be in.

Love the St.Lawrencw market, then and now. Also There was a LCS in Mimico at one time .The name and exact location escapes me.My dad owned a coin laundry at the time and we went to it a lot.he hoarded all silver coins and the 73 mountie for years. Cashed it all in in the mid 80's .Nope, we had no idea about coin collecting at all And yes I still kick myself. Very Hard!

Any of these shops survived? Or are they all extinct?

For once, I am happy to be well below the average! Well then you must really stand out as a youngster at a coin show because sometimes I think I'm the youngest at some of these shows. And I've said this before but about 6 years ago (I was 51) at a stamp show, as I approached the first vendor at his table, he leaned over and asked me 'what are you looking for today, Sonny?" True story.....can you believe a 51 year old called 'Sonny'!! Shows you the state of the stamp hobby.

The only store I knew of when I was a kid was on Roncesvalles Avenue in High Park area of Toronto. It closed down many years ago and then about ten years ago or so the owner of that store opened Ami's Coin Shop just north of the old coin store.

Quote: Well then you must really stand out as a youngster at a coin show Yes, and no... The dealers in eastern Canada know me well... they know that I know how to grade coins and I know my varieties when it comes to Canadian and World coins... most dealers try to scrutinize the coins I select, because they are trying to see if they missed making money on a cherry (variety)... dealers local to the Nuphilex show can be really bad, they even sometimes set the coin down and try to sell me a more expensive "nicer" version. Or worse, they put the coin behind them and say they "made a mistake and the coin is not for sale". Other dealers think that ICCS is the last word in coins, and ignore things like eye appeal - they even sometimes balk when I ask to see a specific coin (if they have 10 of the same grade) - the coins are all the same to those dealers... Hugh Powell, Brad Small, Joe Iorio and Sean Isaacs are refreshing exceptions. After I usually buy a coin from them, they almost always ask me to explain to them why I selected the coin I did (like a red small cent in a ICCS MS-64 flip instead of a MS-65 flip) - because they want to learn a bit of how others see the coins. They are always appreciative of the conversations we have - and I appreciate that in a coin dealer. Of course, when buying a coin from Sandy Campbell, that always hurts the wallet, because he already knows when a coin is special... but I do enjoy my conversations with Sandy as well. But, when I go to shows in western Canada or the US - I am just another collector, and I almost prefer to be able to lurk around a coin show relatively unknown...

Roger.... the Coin World is a very small place where everyone eventually knows everyone........... your " WANTED for Numismatic Cherry Picking " posters are everywhere! !! I know most dealers that I do business with ( mostly US and European ) have always wondered what Canadian Collectors fascination with varieties is. They are prime sources for a visit ! Cheers. As to favourite old time Toronto dealers ......... remember with great trepidation the " HONEST PHYLLIS SEZ" advertising in CCN back in the day. I was about 18 or so and putting together a 1935 to date Dollar set . The return postage for the overgraded messed with coins was not cheap. Fondly remember getting a 1947 Blunt and a 1945 in the mail one day . There were supposed to be Nice AU coins. Sure were ......Absolutely Useless..... wire brushed and abused! A lesson learned!
