This "spiked chin" 1804 Half Cent looks (to me) like it has been engineered. From about 4:00, going to the NW, I think those marks are tool marks, left after somebody along the line removed metal to give the impression that this is a spiked variety.

The crosslet on the four (4) also looks screwy. I don't know what those obvious tool marks on the reverse are all about.

What do you all think? What grade would you give the coin and would you call it problem-free or details?

The obverse die break at LIBER is a one & done for the C-8 variety. The marks near the rim you've pointed out are in the die and appear to match the variety. http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/coin/detail/35167

I don't believe it would be considered problem free but it's still an appealing example to me.

Well that was easy. Thanks, Dave700x!

I'd seen the LIBER die break on other specimens but the tool marks on the die didn't stand out like on this one. I think it's safe to say that the practise of die polishing wasn't quite the same two centuries ago

F-15, details (scratched), not very appealing.

The scratches on the reverse would probably make it a details coin.

I like it ...

Good detail with some interesting die problems.

Yes there are some scratches ... just have to buy a coin like this at the right price.

Despite some minor hits, I find this to be an appealing specimen for the variety. IMHO, it's a VF-25 piece. I'd not distract viewing and studying it by putting it in a slab.
