From a former electronics technician, looks lie solder to me. Bet you could get a knife blade under it and easily bend it up, not solidly adhered.

I have owned this very same Cud in the past. Not the same coin of course but from the same die. It's legit, congrats!

I've seen collectors & sellers refer to this one as the Dolly Pardon Cud, also called a vampire Cud. Nice find

Thanks, everyone. In the last few days I have been wondering to myself, "Why haven't I ever found a nickel Cud?" So, I was pretty excited. Quote: looks lie solder to me I thought that when I first saw it. I wondered if it was the remains of a jewelry attachment that shows up on older, valuable coins. The weakness of the reverse strike and no visible change in metal helped to confirm it for me. Quote: Bet you could get a knife blade under it and easily bend it up, not solidly adhered I wondered also whether it was a large folded-over fin at first. The shadows gave the appearance of metal folded over the coin. But see the close-up picture above; it is firmly part of the coin with the straight cliff-like edge. (And, I keep knives far away from my coins!). Quote:I've seen collectors & sellers refer to this one as the Dolly Pardon Cud, also called a vampire cud Oh, wow. I see that this very Cud also on ebay right now for $80; seems like a high opening bid to me, however: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1983-P-5c-L...112328598506Quote:I have owned this very same Cud in the past.
