A particularly obvious overdate.

This is another "Cap & Rays" specimen that's rather deceptive in that at first glance you could be forgiven for taking it to be considerably worn. However, upon closer inspection it can be discerned that the true state of affairs is that strike is terribly weak towards the center of the coin, especially on the eagle side. A smattering of superficial nicks attests to some slight circulation, but I'd judge its technical grade to actually be much higher than the seller thought.

Nice clear overdate. The fact that a weak strike gets a high technical grade for wear is an issue that should be addressed in the grading community. I know that Bower's has devoted a couple of columns to the subject but it does not get much traction.

Go to Canadian Coins and thumb down to my Blacksmith Wood 23 topic of the DOUBLE BLUNDER. Happens all the time in U.S. Colonials. Also vice versa which is why a lot of people DESTROY pedigrees just to put it into a PCGS holder at a higher grade. Can't blame them ... this is one of the easiest ways to make money in REAL TIME today.
