They do it a lot because it's easy for the workers. I have seen many plated coins. You get it checked, it costs a lot of money.

Seems like it wearing off the high points. So think it was plated. To say why I would be guessing. The manufacturing company I last work at had a plating dept. Would plate coins in all different kinds of alloys and polymers for example pieces. Thanks, Doug.

It is 40% silver and is plated, probably with gold. But, that adds no value. It reduces numismatic value.

This one is 90% silver, gold-plated, bigger and older but still only worth it's weight in silver:

Like everyone has said, it is plated. Paying someone to have it tested would be a waste of time and money. If you want to test it yourself to definitively know if it's gold (which is what I am guess you are implying here) then weigh it yourself. A 40% 1969 Kennedy half dollar weighs 11.5 grams. If it is gold it'll weigh significantly heavier than that.
Weigh it, if it's anywhere around 11 grams, it's a plated coin.

with calling it gold plated. People have been gold plating all kinds of coins for many years. Then sold as gifts usually for young collectors.

What kid wouldn't get a kick out of having a nice shiny "Gold" coin? I know I would've rather got these in my Christmas Stocking than the chocolate ones.

Yours looks to have been done quite a while ago and was probably given as a gift years ago and then could've seen some circulation. Worth melt IMO
