I found a 2009 d copper penny. It weighs the same as a copper penny. I've weighed all my other 2009s and they weigh 2.5. I Did some research and they say the only coppers were in proof sets, but mine is not a proof.

There were some copper ones in the mint set (not proof set). The satin finish ones.

Sorry it is not a Denver mint, it has no mint mark so I assume it's philly.

As scstrawn mentioned, it's likely from the 2009 uncirculated coin set.

WOW... They only made 784,614 of those sets. That is quite a find!

Yes, all of the US Mint Sets issued that year had 95% copper cents instead of zinc. Nice find.

I've got all of my 2009-D cents (maybe 2,000 or so) in a box... and the 100 or so 2009 Philly cents in a couple of tubes... guess I will have to weigh them in hopes of finding these!

There were satin coppers issued as far back as 2005, similar minages. Those will be the keys to LMC series. Get 'em while you can!

Satin Zincolns were in the Mint Sets, not coppers. The collector-version 2009s are the only copper cents issued since 1982.

Thank You! I'm really glad you caught and corrected that!

I could have sworn that the pre-bicentennial satins were coppers/bronze. I'm not sure where I read that but it was likely from another incorrect author. Had you not read that, there's no telling how many people would have repeated it.

And thanks for not calling it "fake news". That phrase is really starting to get to me.

I also found a 2009 D penny weighing 3.1g! Also not in a mint or proof set. Does it still maintain its value since its been in circulation?

Not full value, but it is still 95% copper and worth more than one cent.
