I bought this Edward London penny from a dealer a couple of days ago for 15 quid which is 'on the money' and a good price for the commonest Edward I or II penny and excellent if scarcer. However, I am having some difficulty in deciding what sub-class it is. The bifoliate crown and the obverse legend (EDWAR ANGL DNS HYB) makes it Edward II but I cannot classify it any further - any ideas? The crown appears to be lopsided and does not clearly identify (in my view) with any of the styles illustrated in Spink or Wren. However, I have never really been able to confidently ascertain particular sub-groups from this period, the differences are very subtle in many cases. I would appreciate any input to solve my query.

Sweet! Mintmark is cross Patte, Kings name is 'Edwa' (the 'R' abbreviates Rex, and should not be included in the naming), crown, as you said, is bifoliate. This eliminates classes 1-9, 14 and 15. 12 and 13 are also easily eliminated, because of the mintmark and Fleur like ornament. This leaves 10 and 11. 'luckily' for us, these are the most complex in the entire series. Left ornament is intact, no angular E, so 11 is eliminated as well. Half of ten is eliminated because of the king's name. Based on the crown (small ornaments), it is most likely a secondary phase coin, which would date it to 1305 to 1310, right in the timeframe of late Edward I, early Edward II. Central fleur element is much like 10cf2. 10cf1 and 10cf4 are, looking at the shape of the crown, eliminated. I'm about 99% sure of my attribution to the secondary phase of class 10, and about 65% certain of my attribution to class 10cf2. The distinct variety in the crown seems to match up, but I am not experienced enough to tell with certain certainty. If anyone out there wants to correct me, feel free to do so! 10 (and in particular 10cf2) is just my opinion/best guess.

Class 10cf2 would date it around ~1306-1307, right around the coronation of the second Eddy.

Many thanks for your input and the logic in your explanation - makes sense to me. Frank
