I recently discovered the strange little trend of "lowballs" coins.

I have a few of these from metal detecting over the years.

How do you think this one would grade?

The angle of photos actually give it a lot better detail than in hand. it feels so smooth.

The best thing about Lowballs, is getting to make threads with cool titles :)and being able to feel the smoothness of old lowballs is great.

It would grade better than my own 1862? (Well, one of them, anyway.)
Victorian pennies, especially from the 1860s, are often found in lowball condition, because they circulated a lot, and the date is recessed, which makes it one of the last places to wear away.

Sadly looks like it's the common "faulty top colon stop" variety; see this thread for more on the variety (and for my description of the two lowball 1862 pennies I have).

I'm trying to get as many different dates of post-1860 pennies in lowball grade as possible - looking through the ziploc I keep them in, I have 1860-3, 1865-7, 1870, 1872-5, 1877, 1879, 1907, a bunch of other dates in less extremely low grades (1897 and assorted post-1900), and an 1881 that was apparently damaged early on in its circulation because the wear patterns are way off.

It's fascinating how many variations some of these UK coins have.

I don't know much about them, seeing as I'm from Aus, and most of my coins come from metal detecting.

I think I might make a thread with some other coins I have that might be something more than I originally thought.

Sorry for bumping this otherwise unrelated thread, but I just wanted to mention that I acquired a few more lowball British pennies (most of them for, ironically enough, about a penny each).

I didn't have many 1880s and 1890s in my set, so I focused on that - and the 1870s (because I forgot how many of those I did have).
So, the new dates are 1871, 1874-H (the old one might have been a H, but I did get the 1874 no H too), 1876-H, 1886, 1887, 1890, and preliminarily 1881 and 1892 (will have to check the dates more carefully). 1885 and 1900 are added to the "low but not that low" category.
Would've had 1884 too, but the example I bought was damaged at some point, unfortunately.

I guess this brings my (post-1860) Victorian date set to 1860-3, 1865-7, 1870-7, 1879, 1881, 1885-7, 1890, 1892, 1897, 1900. (I probably forgot some coins that I added between July and March.) This comes out to 24 out of 42 possible dates.
Missing 1864, 1868-9, 1878, 1880, 1882-4, 1888-9, 1891, 1893-6, 1898-9, 1901 (note: the pre-1882 missing dates are all lower mintages). Need to downgrade the 1885, as well (and 1897, and 1900, but that will wait until better coverage of the 1890s).

Incidentally, since 1877 had been covered (twice over now), this also means that, once I find an 1891 coin (of any kind), the most recent date that I don't have (or, at least, don't know I have) any coins from will go all the way back to 1869.
(The next missing date is 1859, then 1850, and from there to 1800 I don't have approximately every other year.)
