I am putting a Canada Small Cent collection together, and I am missing these varieties. For 1965, I need a Variety one with the Small Beads and Pointed 5 in PL. Would prefer one sealed in cellophane cut from the PL set. For this date, I also need Specimen Strikes from SP "Proof" Sets. 1969 and 1970, I am looking for Specimen Strike pennies (NOT Proof-Like). The Specimen strike coins are often called Proof by dealers because they come from deluxe or special edition sets. The 1970 Specimen penny would come from a Special Edition Set. I am not sure about the 1969 Specimen set. In 1967, the Specimen set came in either a Red or Black case and was sold with either a medal or a gold coin. I plucked my 1971 Specimen strike penny from a double penny deluxe set, and my 1972 Specimen strike penny from a double dollar Specimen set. The dealer I purchased the 1972 set from called it a Proof Set, but we all know Proof coins were not minted in Canada until 1981. For 1983, I need both Far and Near Beads in Proof-Like and Specimen. These varieties are hard to tell apart except when they are side by side, so I want to buy them in pairs with one of each variety. I also need a Far Beads in Proof. I just need to know where to buy these pennies. Let me know if you plan to list them on ebay or if they are listed on another Internet site. Do not send me an offer because I think that is not allowed on here. I have watched ebay, and I cannot seem to find any of these for sale. The Far Beads and Near Beads might be there, but not in sets, and I cannot tell them apart from the photos. I have asked for sets, but the dealers keep telling me they only have one type and do not know what type they have in stock. They are not willing to help because the price for these is very low and not worth their time. Once I get these last few coins, the set is complete. The coins need to be nice. I am not looking to buy spotted pennies that were improperly stored unless I am getting a great cheap deal on an otherwise expensive rare coin. Thanks!

Quote: For 1965, I need a Variety one with the Small Beads and Pointed 5 in PL. Good luck with that one... myself and a couple other heavy-hitters in the Canadian small cent collecting world have been searching for this white whale for more than a decade. They _do_ exist, but are exceedingly scarce...

Why is this not in the buy/sell/trade forum?

because the OP doesn't have enough posts to be in that forum according to the rules. instead, he is asking to be directed towards the items by members who know where to find them or have them on their ebay stores.

Thank you for posting that photo of your 1965 Specimen Strike Canada Small Cent. That is a very beautiful coin.
There are some pennies on my checklist that I am probably not going to be able to buy. My best hope is finding them at coin shows tossed in cheap boxes by dealers who do not know what they are worth. I have made a few finds that way already. However, a few of these pennies are actually very common, but not being sold in a way that works for me. For instance, the price guide says that 1983 Far Beads and Near Beads are only $1 and $2 in PL-64, so both must be common; however, the dealers do not sell pairs in PL, SP, or PR. You can only get them this way as business strikes.

Let me ask one more question that might help. Let's just concentrate on the Far and Near Beads for 1983 pennies. I want them in PL, SP, and Proof, but they are not listed as Far or Near Beads in these strike types. The price guide suggest to me they are common, but maybe not. Which, if any of these are extremely rare, and which are not? Can you post photo examples of each in PL, SP, and/or Proof to help me see what they look like. My Proof is a Near beads, but it looks like it is someplace between Near and Far beads when compared with my Business Strike examples. It would be helpful to me if I could see what Far and Near beads looks like in PL, SP, and PR. I could use those photos to compare with on ebay, and hopefully buy one of each myself. Thanks.

Is there a big Canada coin dealer that specializes in Canada pennies that has every year and variety of every year in stock? I cannot get paired sets of 1983 Far and Near Bead varieties in PL, SP, or Proof on ebay. I have asked 25 different people on ebay, and nobody can help me. I need to find a better option for buying these last few varieties. Does anyone have a website for such a coin dealer? Also, does anyone know in what years were PL and SP pennies minted for pennies ranging in date from 1953 to 1970? I need to verify my checklist as being accurate.

You could try J & M coins in Vancouver,BC. They are on Broadway st. You should be able to search for it with this info. They usually do 3-4 pages of advertising in the back of Canadian coin news if you have a copy.
