Sorry md. The letters around the rev are incised so a dd would make them smaller not bigger. I've found on new quarters, about 15 to 20% of them are md on rev.

I thought incused DD's were bigger?
it's MD, the devices are reduced by the "doubling".

I don't know about incused lettering, but the LIBERTY had me fooled at first. The rest of the lettering is clearly MD to me, so I'll toss my agreement into the pile.

Incused devices will typically be reduced on a DD. Enlarged with MD or with machine parts movement. Thanks, Doug.

Thanks everyone. Maybe one day I'll get the hang of this. So the liberty is also md?

Yes.

When you're in doubt about what the normal size is, you can usually compare it to another coin of the same year.

On incuse devices the devices are reduced by hub doubling. (opposite raised devices) On the EPU of a cent, they are incuse. (sunk into the coin) Here is a side by side with a normal EPU and a doubled die EPU:

Unlike MD examples where the device is narrowed, the DD incuse devices are reduce in overall size.

Thanks for the pic Coop. I'd never seen a doubled incuse device, I had it backwards.

I'm still waiting for the first DDR on the outside letters, but it may never happen. It seem that the central areas are only affected on the DDRs on the single squeeze ATB Quarters. So we may never see that. But I'm still waiting though.....

We will see. I remember Ken telling me they usually occur in the center. We were talking about an OIV nickel. I reckon it's applies to a lot of coins. Maybe different designs are subject to incidental contact when being hubbed. Just guessing.
