According to ebay Policy:
You can only list grab bags if you identify all
the contents of the bags.
You can't say that the bags may contain or are worth
such and such.
Not listing all contents becomes a game of chance
therefore against ebay Policy.

how's does this differ from a listing where someone shows a pile of 100 coins, but you are only bidding say 5 or 10?

or uses a stock photo?

Wade-
On your first question, I have never seen a listing showing
a hundred coins but you bid on only a few. I would imagine it would be
OK as long as all the coins were the same and you wanted to buy a couple.
It would not be much different from someone showing a photo
of a single coin and saying multiples are available.
I may be wrong on this but ebay doesn't really specify this in there guidelines.
Maybe someone else might have an idea.

Your second question. ebay states-
"Include a clear picture of the actual coin being sold-
don't use stock photos"

Some larger retailers do use stock photos but they have to
have permission from the rights owner to use it.

It can be confusing at times what is allowed and what isn't.

a stock photo should only be used when it represents a coin of exact condition.. and in my opinion it is a very gray area..because even a coin in similar condition will vary in appearance.. but ebay picks its battles..it is like the seller who offers a photo of 100 prooflike silver dollars, and says you will get one of them.. I would never purchase from someone like that, who can't take the time to photo each coin.. if you where just buying them for bullion that would be a different case, as you are jut buying for silver value..

There are a lot of BIN listings or auctions that let you bid on coins from a pile, but you don't know what you are getting.

There is also a lot of auctions showing a pile of 100s of pounds of coins and you are bidding on 1, 5, 10 etc pounds worth.

I guess it's a fine line between a grab bag and a stock photo of a pile of coins. I just didn't see much of an issue with the listing that was originally reported - it's not much different from the examples that can be found on the 'bay, and was curious as to why it was listed.

PS, this can probably be moved to the eBay/online related forum section
