I have a suspicion this is not DDR, but I've never seen it before and am curious to know what it is if it isn't DDR. It almost looks like the lettering and the metal immediately around it is peeling away from the coin surface.

It looks like Die Deterioration to me...Not a doubled die. I know that is what Die Deterioration Doubling looks like...but you'll have to wait for someone more informed on this to find exactly how it gets that way.

Die Deterioration Doubling sounds like a good description of what I suspected it to be.

Actually the metal isn't peeling away. When the die wears it removes the device's edges and flows into the field. Nickels being harder wear the dies faster. Seems like these dies were also used beyond their normal age. The Denver Mint made the record number of Nickels that year. And they probably cut corners to get there. 1,787,297,160 from that mint.

so that would also explain why I always find so many 64Ds in my rolls - more than any other nickel type from the 60s ... and you are confirming it's Die Deterioration Doubling correct?

Yes I agree. I always like to know why. If I know why something happened, then I feel I have learn that and can move on. If not, I always question what I find. I save coins for educational purposes. that is why I come up with coins that questions are asked about. So I would keep it for future reference in case someone asks a question and you can show them what they might have if they can't produce an image.
