This token is 15/16" (24.5 mm) in diameter, about 1 mm thick and weighs about 4-5 grams. The Reverse is totally blank. The material appears to be copper/bronze. There is a circle of beads that is 1/2" (12.5 mm) in diameter. The crown appears to indicate that it is from one of the British Commonwealth countries (I live in Canada and it was passed down to me). There are four stars - two on each side. It appears to be inscribed "PLATED", and yet it is not actually plated. Any ideas?

More likely a scale weight 4 stars 4 grams it was plated at one time, also appears to have spent time in the ground.
Rest in Peace

It's a puzzler.

The crown hallmark is (generally) from Sheffield. 925 silver would have a lion on it as well -- so "plated" fits that.

I thought it might just be a backing of some sort -- like an award pin or a tie tac would fit into the inner circle.

It's also possible it fell off of something --

Given it's size, I'd guess it's some sort of button or pin enhancement.

You may need to dig into your family history to find out if anyone received an award or decoration that would have come with it.

That looks like the backmark off a old British flat button. The Crown was stamped on British buttons and the "plated" has been mentioned. The fastener is missing from the central mounting spot.
