Well, as the title says, hi all.

I'm new to the site and have come to coin collecting by a circuitous route. I keep telling people that I'm not a coin collector but it's probably about time to admit to myself and the world that I actually am.

I got into coin collecting through dealing in coins. I started dealing in coins because of my addiction to collecting watches. Strange, I know, but I am a regular attendee of auctions and started picking up collections of coins that I was familiar with purely to flip for profit to finance my watch purchases. I'm not bad at it. However, this got me interested and when I'm interested in something I start to delve deeper.

The upshot of all this is that I find myself, on a Sunday evening, trying to catalogue a whole host of medieval and ancient coins and finding myself well and truly stumped. That brought me here. So, I stand before you and say:

"My name is JimmyD and I am a coin collector".

(If any of you feel like you're up to a challenge, I'll post some photos of the ones that have me stuck).

We have a saying on the watch forums: threads are useless without pictures. So, here are a few of the coins I've been working through today:

and here's some of the coins that are causing me issues identifying (I'm not sure this first isn't a medal or medallion):

(Hope I've got the formatting right!)

Thanks - but you should see the 60+ coins that I've got here that all seem to be medieval or (much) earlier .... I keep looking at them thinking I don't even know where to start!

The medal you posted would be something from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. There were a whole lot of different medals produced at that time for that event, but a little more information can be read of that specific one here.

As for the last group of coins, I would suggest posting them in the Ancient and Medieval Coins forum. The experts in that area will probably be able to help you. And keep in mind, when posting pictures of coins, posting both sides can help a lot.

Thank you all for the welcome! I hope you don't mind all the questions that I'll be full of over the coming days, weeks, months ... years? I usually only have to be told once, though, and I do love research so I might well be able to start contributing answers and not just questions in the not too distant future.
