I hope you all don't mind my throwing out some rather unspectacular coins with the intention of getting better at grading. I would really appreciate the practice.

I think the reverse shows a little more more wear than the obverse, so as an aggregate grade I'll put it at F-15.

I'm still working on it, too!

Edit: in combination with the grading posts here, I use the PCGS Photograde app on my phone. I believe there is also a web version of that, too. It's not perfect but, it helps with the high-resolution images coming from a trusted TPG.

Oijogja, I have a book by Charles Daughter called "Looking through Lincoln Cents". Its an introductory book into doubled dies an mintmarks. Very informative on those topics but it has a photo section on grading, one of the easiest I've found to understand. I use that to compare my coins to. Also, sites like PCGS have sections of photo grading. Comparison, and an explanation what to look for, how much wear and on what device, that'll learn ya!

So, as a start, note the wear on the wheat stalk tips, lack of lines gets F. Becauz not much dings, good sign, but has extensive wear both sides. Coat has lost detail, rim is rough, very little detail remains on hair, beard, ear. This then begins the point count between F-10 and F-15, because of weakness but clear fields gets high grade of F-15. Make cents?

Here's your photograde link.

It looks like F15 but that grime would take it down a notch for eye appeal.
But don't clean it!

Thanks for the responses. I had guessed a little higher at vf20. I do have the PCGS photograde app, but nonetheless find it difficult to nail down a grade sometimes. I think practice will really help, so thanks a bunch everyone. I hope to keep tossing pictures up here across the spectrum so I can hone my skills.

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, I should mention I also try to use the descriptions for grades on the Wikipedia entry for the Sheldon scale. I don't know if you think that's going to be helpful or unhelpful, but here's a link if you'd like to look it over and comment.

I'm at F-15 also . Oh and BTW , when you have crud like that around the letters of a coin ,Acetone and toothpick will usually do the job , practice on common coins like the one in photo .

Thanks, how do you safely remove the coin from the acetone, though? Is it not unsafe to get on your skin? I know it needs to be well ventilated and away from flame.

Oijogja > Yes you don't want to get Acetone on your skin , but not that critical that your finger will fall off .
What I use to remove my coin from a small cup of Acetone is wooden chop sticks with a rubber band on them high up on the sticks as to not get the Acetone on the rubber band .
