For classic U.S. coin series (I am principally collecting Buffalo nickels and Walker halves), I have the following (potentially naive) questions:

Given the perceived market differential between PCGS and NGC graded coins, for coins of a certain value, will there not always be an incentive to submit an NGC graded coin to PCGS as a crossover? Isn't the worst thing that can happen that PCGS returns the coin as not worthy of the same grade ascribed by NGC? I must be missing something here.

Also, does anyone have a rule of thumb of the value differential between PCGS and NGC graded coins? I have seen the Numismedia values for each but it seems that the difference is understated, at least for mint state and key dates.

Hi Grogan,
I agree that in general the same coin in a PCGS slab will sell for more than if in an NGC slab, and it will probably be a little easier to find a ready buyer. For some coins like modern deep-cameo proofs NGC is definitely looser with the ultimate PR-70 grade. For those coins the PCGS slab will cost a lot more, maybe double. I believe that PCGS will not accept '69 or '70-graded coins for crossover, however; they say that since they cannot see the edges they won't take the chance on those highest-grade coins. If you have some of those that you want in PCGS plastic you will have to crack them out and submit them raw.

High-value, NGC-slabbed coins may be worth a shot for crossover to PCGS. I have crossed a few coins but I've also had some that didn't cross. The cost however is significant. If you just want to send one coin it will cost at least $45 including postage for the cheapest ("economy") service level. You save on postage if you send more coins so the per-coin cost will drop. Still, you have to decide whether the potential value increase is worth the investment. You are correct that the coin will just come back in the original NGC slab if they don't cross it.

Do you have some coins you want to send in?

Thanks for the response. I have a few NGCs worth in the $ 2000-4000 range and maybe somewhere down the line, I will consider trying submitting them to PCGS. I have heard that I will have a better chance of getting an MS65 in an NGC holder graded MS65 by PCGS if I take it out and submit it raw. The danger of course is it comes back in a MS 64 (or worse) and there's no guarantee I can get it back into an NGC holder at 65, not to mention the expense and angst involved.

you can submit a coin for crossover at the same grade and if it doesn't meet their requirement for that grade they will ship it back in the NGC slab, but you still pay the same thing, if it does then they will crack it out and reslab it in a PCGS holder, just be sure you don't leave out that one step and not say you want it crossed at the same grade or they will crack it out no matter what it grades and it may come back lower
