Josh Tatum never existed (At least the one referred to in the "story") and the term "Josh" meaning to trick of foll dates back to the 1840's long before the Racketeer nickel ever saw the light of day. The Josh Tatums story doesn't even date to before the 1950's. There are contemporary reports about the gold plated nickels, but just as warning to watch out for them. The Tatum story is pure fiction.

I wonder if the Treasurey made the story up ? The story is on the PCGS site.

Lots of numismatic lore gets repeated as fact even when it's nonsense. GW did not deposit Martha's silver for the 1st coinage, he deposited Spanish Silver Dollars. etc.

So, I know you used a couple acetone baths on this but, what else? Xylene and toluene were mentioned. I'm interested because I have a (boring) 1990 cent that appears to be plated with gold or brass. It's been soaking in acetone for a few days now.

If toluene didn't work, maybe try trinitrotoluene.

I would bet that this coin is not gold-plated. Some Shield nickels tone to a golden color. If you really want it off there something like a dip in Jewel Luster would probably do it. But I wouldn't dip it. There's nothing wrong with a nice golden-toned Shield nickel.

As far as whether it's an 83/2, I don't see anything that makes me think it might be.

He didn't even do that. The silver for the 1792 Half Dismes came from Thomas Jefferson's personal accounts. Washington wasn't even in Philadephia when the Half Dismes were struck.
