It would be risky looking at the areas of grime and grease. Too bad original finder didn't just wash it with mild soap and water, but was most likely aware that the underneath of those areas would indeed be noticeably lighter. The grime is imbedded in areas that catch and don't rub off, no telling how long it was on there.
That said, am surprised coin got AU58, seems more worn than that, overlap is only distinct on motto?...you just might regret a resubmit...

I'd just leave that awesome coin alone. It adds to the authenticity of it never having been cleaned and nothing is going to get worse in the next 50 years.

If it was my coin I would let a professional restoration service do their magic on this piece . Is there any crud on the reverse ?

No crud on the reverse, at least not globs of crud anyway.

Why send it to PCGS? Send it to the NGC restoration, they do great work and maybe they might give you a discount due to them slabbing it like that.

To me it is still cleaning. It is missing a layer metal when they conserve a coin: Seems like it would not be a MS coin anymore in my eyes. To me it is better to leave them un-altered.

Really I just used PCGS as an example. Honestly I don't have intentions right now or sending it off to anyone. Was more curious about the restoration process and how it affects the grade and overall appearance. Yea I would probably send it to NGC since they graded the coin to begin with.
The coin is actually a fairly strong AU58 and it's just the pictures not doing the condition justice.

See Coop that's why I am asking because I agree with you if that's the end result of being restored. I wouldn't want it stripped raw again or the brown removed. I was thinking more of a wooden toothpick gently removing the grime not a full blown sandblasting LOL.

It is beautiful the way it is. A coin like this, even if conserved will still be an AU 58 BN.

That is a very nice coin to own! I don't have much faith in the third party grading companies, and wouldn't want to take a chance on it coming back with a cleaned look to it. I would leave it alone or attempt to improve it myself, but I'm kind of crazy that way.
