i can't get over the fact that you people think the rolls are defective..and I personally think that advising people to buy lots of sets and make there own set, and return the others is unethical..a sad day in my eyes..

Sometimes the only way to deal with an unethical company is to give it back to them (pardon the pun), hoping that they'll learn from the experience. Sad, but true. For RCM it's profit first, collectors second.

Yes, lets put the Royal Canadian Mint in the same leagues as Volkswagen and Dieselgate. Although I agree with Silvewolf on the unethical behavior of ordering lots to cherry pick and return the rest, I was very frustrated that 3 of my 5 rolls did not show what was special about the coins. I do feel that the mint had an obligation to send special rolls as pictured - Head and tail showing. For the money I really feel that they dropped the ball.

I think the RCM just thought sending out random wrapped rolls of these special occasions would satisfy most buyers, but when you add a special box and their pictures of this set has created the backlash, like I said it's an easy fix for the RCM to manually select first and last coins of the roll, just do it and make your customers happy.

Absolutely the Mint needs to step up. They made a mistake and they should own it. I don't have a lot of mint rolled coins, but just for fun I decided to look at their orientation. These are the results: Of 10 non-special wrapped rolls: 7 display Obverse & Reverse, 2 are Reverse & Reverse and 1 is Obverse & Obverse. Of 14 special wrap rolls: 12 are O&R and 2 are R&R. Non fail to show the unique design. Add to that that all of the 10 rolls of 2012 special wrapped pennies that I have are oriented as you would expect for such a commemorative. That can't be a coiincidence. Clearly, the Mint knew what they were doing 5 years ago but somehow they forgot in 2017...

Insult to injury - I was at the post office shipping back my stanley cup quarters, and the Canada150 coins... I also had a pick up notice for a parcel that I hadn't been home to receive. Yup, it was the 50C x 2 rolls. and yes, the standard ones showed reverse both sides (coat of arms) but the special Canada150....2 queens AGAIN.
So, I called my rep, from the parking lot. He told me to go ahead, and order some more, when you randomly can make the set you want.... ship the remainder back.
So, they are aware of the problem, and have created a shipping nightmare - especially with the cost of shipping rolls of coins. Just WOW.

In the normal world buying just to ship back would be unethical. The truth is here, money is flowing from one government crown corp into the hands of another gov crown corp.

Quote: In the normal world buying just to ship back would be unethical. I agree that this is not the case in today's world. We're merely protecting ourselves from the mint's __________ (choose your favourite word). You know it's bad when even the reps are advising us to return the rolls. Looks like many collectors won't let them get away with it this time. Only one out of 10 reviewers on the mint's site atm is happy with this set. Either he was lucky to get a proper set or he doesn't care.

Punman, what are the odds of getting a dozen rolls (representing the whole order) each showing the identical orientation, i.e., HH, HO, etc? (Here we're imagining the pattern conforms to the one the customer hopes to get). Now how about 15 rolls? The reason I am asking is I would like to have a rough idea of when "assurances of randomness" runs up against statistical thinking. In that regard, would one need to compare one's dozen or fifteen roll "miracle" against other similar instances--as enabled by a forum such as this one perhaps? Tia

Are you saying you do not care what is on the ends, as long as it is the same on all 15 rolls or do you want a specific roll end on all rolls?

Punman, I am assuming, perhaps incorrectly it seems, that the odds would be the exact same for any desired pattern. Then, secondly, and stated more explicitly, I am asking about the odds for the pattern (in our case, usually, OR) over twelve and then fifteen rolls. Finally, I am inquiring if any one instance of such an occurance would have statistical validity or would some other condition need to be met, such as multiple individuals, as we have here, receiving the same desired yet purportedly random distribution of heads and tails. Hope that clears up. Thanks.

In the case of the 20/4/20's, they were buying face value, earning points, on their credit cards, earning points towards their master club membership, and then returning them via a 3rd party negating any refund penalty against either their cc points or club membership.....then doing it all over again
