Going through my stash and found this 1980 cent that weighs 3.29 g compared to 2.80 g of normal 1980 's just wondering how common this is.

Good question... I suspect not many people have bothered to look or check... also, coins can be minted in years other than the current calendar date (e.g., I have a 1995 1-cent struck on a $2 core).

This is the same era but in USA pennies, weights and dollar values. I think this was overlooked in Canadian pennies!!

Relic its not a error its a variety like the P non mag pennies. The coins were struck properly but they used up left over planchets. The years to check are all transition years if possible.

OLDMIKE - I was going to check my stash for these when I found that USA artical and suspected this could have happened here in Canada. Using up left over planchets would go undetected and now with these digital scales makes it easy. Looking at the Charlton a 1979 1 cent weighs 3.24 grams and a 1980 1 cent weighs 2.8 grams. Heres the catch if you can check the thickness the 1979 is 1.55mm and the 1980 is 1.38mm. If all your CSI coin scene investigation fits then no doubt you have a new variety! For say you get it certified with ICCS trust me it might take a little convincing with those guys.PCGS might be better because they already did the USA 1983 ones. If you do get it certified you must let us know the out come.

interesting, would this be considered a 'wrong planchet' error? was the mint handling any foreign planchets of this weight, or is it simply a 1979 planchet?

if a '79 planchet is it going to affect the value or is this just another cent?

if it did affect the value, would the value increase more as the spread in years increased? (ie, worth more if it were a 1981 or 82)

It's definitely the same thickness as the 79, however I don't think it would get much of a grade as there is a scratch on the bust
