Looking through a box of halves, I unwrap a roll and see this:

Weird-Find-In-Box-Of-Halves:-1960-1985-Counterstamp

My heart starts racing. What could it be? Turns out it was this:

Weird-Find-In-Box-Of-Halves:-1960-1985-Counterstamp Weird-Find-In-Box-Of-Halves:-1960-1985-Counterstamp Weird-Find-In-Box-Of-Halves:-1960-1985-Counterstamp

Other than a cruel strange joke, what is this? Someone got bored or what?

try to weigh it. If it weighs more than a clad half, then you probably have some gold! What are those numbers in pic 2 one both sides of the head?

look at pic 2 the "gold" is wearing off, ahah its white gold or platinum, plated with yellow gold! that could prolly fetch 10k on ebay

of course theres that tiny chance it could be painted. lol

Thanks for making a person feel good...the rest of you are just mean!

Don't have high hopes for this to be anything buy some person's failed attempt at alchemy or more likely painting, but hey, who knows? I'll weigh it and put it on a magnet.

Yeah, those dates are weird. Why counterstamp it with that? And although both sides make it seem like the "paint" is wearing off, the color looks pretty good for the most part. Not obviously spraypainted or whatever else they did to it. I included the pic of the edge because what caught my attention the most is the reeding. All the halves I've ever seen in circulation have at least a little to full wear. This one is as untouched as I've ever seen. A very well taken care of joke!

I'll get you for this Gadget...if its the last thing I do!! *meow*

I can't say that I wouldn't have gotten a bit excited for a moment, but is there a gold coin that is roughly the same size as a half? If there is I know what I want to find in my next box, you can keep the walkers.

It is a novelty gift shop piece, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Kennedy's election.

Whaaa? Really? Wow. What the heck.

Well, there goes the rarity value. I'll contact my ebay buyer and tell them I'm refunding their 10k promptly. Thanks for the heads up

And to think, I'm almost wasted a 2x2 on this thing. Though it is pretty cool. Worth less than $0.50 probably, but still cool to me.

Not really. There are people who collect counterstamps. You might get a small premium for it, but probably not anything worth the effort.

Absolutely! Keep it for a while as a conversation piece or give to a young relative!

I've gotten 1 or 2 of these before, I just put them on the side for future inspection. Itl ooks like it has been placed in some type of dye or chemical.
