I recently got this item in a job lot of medals. No my collecting field, so unsure if it is even a coin. Looks medieval, but not sure of that either. Can anyone help?

Interesting piece. I just looked through my copy of 'Les Monnaies Royales De France Depouis Hugues Capet Jusqu' A Louis XVI' and did not see it on any of the 118 pages of line drawn French Royal coins.

There are several things about this that, to me, look odd, such as,
1. The Fleur De Lis is more often on the left of a split shield.
2. Seldom is there only one Fleur
3. I did not see another coin with that exact style of cross.

This means very little however.

Other difficulties are that , in France, at least, is for almost every King minting coins numerous Lords, Dukes, Abbots, and Bishops also minted coins. Silver coins were often minted in Billion, or even more interestingly, in Bas Argent. basically Bad Silver. And This was by the crown. So who knows what the lord high Abbot of some remote province was using.

Looks like a fun research project

@WM, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is a great coin that you have there. It looks to me like you have a Saluto d'argento from Charles of Anjou (13th Century AD). It was minted in the Italian City State of Sicily:

The shield has the cross of Jerusalem on the left and the arms of Anjou on the right. Here is a link with some back story:

I'll ask the mods to move your thread over to the ancients/medieval section of CCF so that others can weigh in on your coin.
