Very interesting. Not sure if we understand the term, "maille".
So does this originate from the armour the knights wore?

Maille is an archaic spelling of mail (armour).

I make my own rings so I know the edges are flush unlike pre-made rings. It makes a huge difference in time when actually putting the maille together.
