Over on Photomacrography Equipment Forum, there is an interesting thread discussing the use of a speaker voice coil as a focus stacking stage. I built and tested such a stage, and it works extremely well. Take a look at:

http://www.photomacrography.net/for....php?t=33439

I used a small (1.5") long-throw, full-range driver powered by a variable DC power supply to test the concept.

I made an earlier post showing the result of this method, using a 20x lens that I previously thought was impractical for use with coins due to the small depth of field. The depth of field is so small that it challenges my existing stepper-based stacking system, but with the voice coil stacker the lens becomes useable. Take a look here:

At this point, the system is very experimental, and no real hardware exists. A few folks on the PM forum seem to be building the electronics needed to make it work. I used a power supply and series resistor to make mine work, which is about as simple as I could come up with to do the job. I may look for a cheap power supply that can allow a similar functionality. Eventually the folks on PM forum will come up with a canned system, but for those intrepid folks who want to try this out, don't be afraid to do what I did.

What is the step size needed for your 20X objective? Over on the other coin forum I think you mentioned that this is the 20X Nikon measuring microscope objective?

The smallest I can do comfortably with my setup is 2 microns. One micron might be doable, but would be annoying/tiring. Also, I don't know how accurate the old Zeiss Ultraphot focus block is with small step sizes.

I certainly won't be using any homebrew electronics, so I'll have to wait for a canned system, if I ever try stacking at 20X. The other big issue with 20X is the price -- 2000+ for a 20X/0.42 Mitutoyo M Plan APO, for example.

An interesting characteristic of the Numerical Aperture is that it completely defines the depth of field. No information about magnification is required. You are correct that I'm using the 20xMM objective for the 20x images. The 20xMM has NA of 0.4, so from the table below it has a DOF of 3.4um. I generally prefer shooting at a step size of 75% the DOF, so I used a step size of 2.5um, which is 2 steps in my stepper-based stacker.

For reference, below is the table of DOF vs NA for microscope objectives, though it works for any lens with NA specified:

Microscope Objectives
NA DOF
0.1 0.055 mm
0.14 0.028 mm
0.2 0.014 mm
0.25 0.0088 mm
0.3 0.0061 mm
0.4 0.0034 mm
0.5 0.0022 mm
0.55 0.0018 mm

A Nikon 20x 0.4 Mplan objective has reasonable working distance and is very sharp. It's not telecentric, but that's not a huge negative. They can be had for $100-$200 if you are patient. I have been using one for imaging turntable styli:

Thanks rocky! The system is really, very cool, and pretty cheap. It should work for any practical level of magnification. The little speaker will cost ~$3-5. The resistor is ~$0.50. And you can get a cheap Chinese power supply for ~$25, though it will take a while to ship. Total cost for an infinitely-variable stacking rig with better than 0.5um step size: <$50.

edited to add: this mechanism can be used for critical focusing as well. Works very well.
