Firstly sorry for the low-grade photos and my lack of digital scale...
I have this 1951 cent that's a shade smaller in diameter than other cents and it's about half as thick. I'm thinking it is on the wrong planchette or something. It's not magnetic btw.
Anybody seen something like this before? worth sending off to be graded maybe?

A close up of both sides of the coin would help

Here's pics of both sides. I've never tried soaking coins in cola....it does make sense that it would eat away at the coins like that.

There are a lot of science experiment coins out there.

This has the classic signs of an acid penny. Smaller diameter, thinner, mushy appearance of the devices.

I don't believe that RCM made any foreign coins in 1951 so that would rule out a foreign planchet. Of course I am no expert. This is just my opinion!

Agree, most likely treated with acid.

These acid treated coins continue to plague our error hobby. They show up on the forums as well as ebay all the time. Almost as common as garage job sandwich coins....maybe more common.

thanks for weighing in gang! I am glad I checked in with you experts. I'll toss it down a well tomorrow and wish for something (like a 1921 50 cents)...
