I picked this up today at a show labeled "nice VF". I would have to agree...and think it grades a bit higher
I needed the regular issue for 1940, and this was a great deal!

Nice coin Kurt, I would say at least EF-40, if maybe a bit higher.

Thanks! Many of the 5c and 10c pieces I got at the show are just as nice or better.

I forgot about you going to the coin show, I was going to get you to look for a Newfie 1904H large cent.
It was the last one I needed for my complete set.

Well...I'm dropping by the show today too, so I could check with this one guy who sold me the rest of my coins. Would you like me to check--what grade are you looking for?

looks XF to me - the wear on the leaves above ONE and CENT jump out. the obverse shows wear on the crown and cheek. nice coin, I would gladly add this one to my collection, esp. at VF prices.

"... the obverse shows wear on the crown and cheek. nice coin"

Thanks! It cost me all of $3. Do you collect this series? It would be good to know other NFLD collectors to trade notes.
Something I especially look for in the obverse are the faint jewels on the crown band which is the first wear surface on the obverse, and many XF coins have lost this detail. Comparing this coin to many graded ones on Heritage, I'm pretty certain the obverse is AU--in fact I have an ICCS AU55 with less band jewel detail/more wear. The reverse shows a little more wear, however I have seen differences in leaf/flower detail even in AU cents that could be due to strike? Overall, I'm comfortable grading this a XF45+.

As an FYI, here's a photo showing some coins ranging from XF-MS grades. Note the leaf surfaces and strike details of the flower on the pitcher plant--despite the grade which Heritage provided (which do correlate well to the obverse portrait): MSRB, MSRB, AU, MSRB (weaker reverse strike), XF, AU (cleaned).

that 47 is a beauty. I collect Newfoundland coins - mostly 20th century stuff at the moment.

here's one of my favorite coins - the pictures do it no justice.

Steve,
Very nice! Great strike and surfaces. I really like that original color.

Btw, did you ever see this article on NFLD mintages for '44?
