I'm thinking of making an offer on this one but wanted to get some opinions on grade/problems and what you'd pay if you wanted a decent 1913-S Type 1. Thanks for taking a look. I think it grades around F15 to VF20. An attractive coin. Numismedia puts it around 45 - 50 bucks. I used Photograde. Can't tell if it was cleaned but it sure has no ugly distractions. They say that the 1913 S Ty 1 is the weakest struck of the type 1 Buffalos so I guess you're good there. I can't say what I'd pay. That's up to you.

Thanks for the input NickelGuy.
I mainly don't want a problem coin because there's something I'm overlooking. I also don't want a "raised" date and I'm no expert on spotting them.

A lot I see are acid restored dates. If you are eBaying for one. Watch for newly listed "buy it now"s. Take a deep breath and look those over. Only buy one that really grabs ya and has no problems. By the looks of that one you were or are watching, it didn't look too bad at all except it's hard to tell whether it was cleaned or not. I'm not a fan of Ampex in any way, never bought from them but check this one out. I'd take one of these over two of those anyday. http://www.apmex.com/product/16503/...pping_engine.

Quote: I'd take one of these over two of those anyday. I'm sorry but, you'd take one of which? If the APMEX one, I can't afford $100 for one right now, just looking for something intermediate. I don't have any sort of Buffalo collection to speak of but would like a Type 1 that's not very worn and/or dateless.

I certainly appreciate it. I'll keep looking but, if you come across anything worth taking a look at, feel free to PM me.
I could go for a P or D but figured if I'm specifically looking for a Type 1 then I should get an S, slabbed or not.
I would definitely like one that's more than F-VF.

I would not bother with this Buff . Some of the issues are : washed out appearance , weak Liberty , not full horn , ( most VF's have FH ), most letters on top of reverse have seen better days . If you want BETTER than F-VF then this coin is not for you !

Agree F-15+, decent example for the grade.

Using Photograde, I agree with VF-20. It's not until about VF-35 that I see a full horn.
The coin is listed as VF by a coin seller with almost 6000 feedback at 100%. They seem to take pretty good pics, too. I'm still watching it but am thinking that I may be able to get a better deal following some auctions instead of BIN. That is, unless this seller accepts the low offer I would give. They have already lowered the BIN price about $4 after only a few days of being listed.
Thank you everyone for the input!

vf20 and fairly attractive in spite of being weakly struck on the right side. Nice color and surface. I would buy it at 80% of wholesale due to strike. Good luck.

numismatic_student I'm actually already watching that one. I figure it will get out of my price range, though. NickelGuy I may look into those more. With the lower prices, I can definitely get a higher grade specimen and probably slabbed, too. After all, my goals are really just to get a Type 1 and a higher grade Buffalo than the worn ones I have.
