Hi friends, I am very new at this. I am from Connecticut and just inherited some coins from my great uncle. He was an avid coin collector and when I cleaned out his house I found a lot of coins. Mostly pennies. There are a dozen or so small cloth bags with 15 pennies in them five from each of the mints. There is also a box of $10 in rolls of pennies. They are all from 1973. I'm wondering if they are worth anything more than a penny. There is a fundraiser happening at the school I work at and they are collecting pennies. Do I add them to my home rooms jar in hopes that the kids win a pizza party or do I find a place for them that they will be appreciated and not just dropped off at the bank? Thanks for your advice. Welcome!

I will tell you that they are at best not worth much more than a penny. If they are red, shiny coins that look like they just came from the mint, they have some minimal value above one cent each. You could possibly sell complete rolls of them for $3-5 on ebay but I would ask myself if it is really worth the trouble or not.

If they are regular brown cents, just go for the pizza party.

to the forum!

If you decide to sell on ebay, sell multiple rolls, say three per for the $3-5 bid, but remember to add SHIPPING costs to that, depending on carrier and class it'll be $2.67 -7.15. Just a little bit of friendly advise...since I didn't heed my own warning...made less than $.50 on 2 rolls, unless you subtract the gas to PO...

The little bags with the five from each mint can be very popular. They are a neat "novelty" item than many people haven't seen. I've seen them go for as much as five dollars a bag.

1973 cents are very underappreciated. It was the most lightly saved date since about 1934. However, there were a couple million mint sets and these get cut up for the mint set only Ike leaving large numbers of the one cent coins saturating the tiny market for moderns.

They're never going to be valuable probably at this late date but I sure would be sure to hold onto nice gemmy examples. There are a lot of these better dates among moderns.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
