I'm not sure but, it brings up a question I've been meaning to ask.

Are cent blanks plated before or after the upsetting process?

PMD. Notice the edge pictures where there is the slightest band of plating in the center? Someone polished or sanded the rims to remove the copper plating.

@Spruett, http://www.lincolncentresource.com/...anchets.html I had to look it up, but the existence of a type two zinc planchet suggests it gets plated after they're upset.

As far as sanding the rims wouldnt make any sense because this penny is wider in comparison to other pennies. If was sanded on the edge, wouldn't it still be the same width?

Regardless of what caused it, the fact remains that the edge was intentionally beveled which removed the copper plating in the process. The coin did not leave the Denver Mint looking like that.

Zinc blanks go through the upsetting prior to electroplating.

It looks like the edge has been 'worked' somehow. You say the rim is wider that a normal cent? Can you post up a side-by-side comparison of the edges?
