I picked up this coin today for SHAFTA9a, and it was graded as "VF"--undergraded perhaps? The obverse and reverse fields are nicely flat and reflective, which is hard to capture but my photo gives a good impression overall.   |

the obverse is closer to XF, but the reverse crown wear knocks it down to VF. a very nice coin regardless.

Steve, If you're familiar with this series, I'll certainly bow to your knowledge here, as I don't collect NFLD large cents. That said, this coin has good amount of original luster on the obverse and reverse which the photo doesn't accurately convey. Regarding the reverse, I would say the apparent crown "wear" is more due to how contact affected the toning versus actual loss of detail by wear. I thought at first the central support of the crown was very flattened from wear, until I compared to an MS64 coin from Heritage (below). Overall the reverse detail/luster doesn't suggest typical VF wear patterns to me. However, if Shafta9a isn't happy with this 1904H, she's welcome to return it...I love this coin!  Edited by KurtS

the leaf wear and the crown on the reverse are VF type wear - overall it's either a high VF or low XF. I tend to grade more conservatively so I would go with a VF grade. I also like that chocolate brown color it has - a classic example of that coin.
if Shafta9a doesn't want it, i'll take it.

Ok, you may be right--because I'm not very familiar with this series. I consider myself a conservative grader too, I just tend to weight the obverse which certainly isn't VF wear--imo. Yes, great color! Edited by KurtS

Well.. Kurt, I received the Newfoundland coin today,and I'll tell ya what boys(like the Newfoundlanders would say) she's a beaut I would say you are right Kurt,in saying that it has retained a good amount of original luster.  I would grade this coin between EF-40 and AU Very well pleased, Thanks, again  |

Mary, I'm glad you like the coin...I suspected it was under-graded--and a good buy I do this from time to time when I see a great coin another collector might like. In case anybody is curious--I purchased this from Tim Yager of Arroyo Grande, CA. I've bought many nice NFLD coins from this dealer. |

showed the picture to my mentor - he said it's a nice coin but he would call it a VF based on the reverse. I told him he taught me well. he still won't let me buy anything.

You, your mentor, etc. are entitled to their opinion, but I'm going to disagree here. Personally, I find it a bit tenuous to insist on grading a photo--without seeing the coin in person.  I stand by my call that "VF" is undergrading for the reasons already provided. Above all, I'm happy that Shafta likes the coin--I'll let her be the final judge. And, if I were to venture a guess, ICCS would grade this at least XF40. I've seen enough ICCS slabbed coins to know that much. I do hope my point here is well-taken. After all, I simply posted here to share this "beaut"; this wasn't a grading forum request. Edited by KurtS

no problems Kurt - I agree - you have to have the coin in hand to really come up with a grade. I was commenting more on the fact that the reason I came up with the VF was how I was taught to grade and that my teacher concurred with my grade. I guess I learned to undergrade - which may or may not be a problem ;)
it is a very nice coin and beats the snot out of my same date coin. I would buy it if I came across it, that's for sure.

Steve, Yes, it's tricky to grade from photos which is why I chose to augment the photo with a description. I think this particular case also underlines how strike and toning may contribute to a perception of wear. Note how the lack of high-point reverse details coincides with obverse relief? A similar situation happens with NFLD small cents on the reverse--irrespective of grade. Just my observation--cheers. Edited by KurtS
