Hi all! On my travels in Peru I came across a little shop where the owner pulled out six royal cobs from the Potosi mint. 5 x 8 reales and one 4 reales but they all looked suspiciously similar in wear and oxidation. The 8 reales are between 39.2 and 40.8 mm in diameter and are thicker in the middle of the coin: 3.2 to 3.6 mm and about half that at the rim. The 4 reales is 32.3 - 32.8 mm diameter and 2.8 mm thickness in the middle. Weights are 27.15 to 26.62 g and 13.85 g resp. I suspect them all to be fakes. What do you think? (There are two dated 1693)
These are indeed well-known (to those who know such things) imitations or "tribute replicas" of Potosi Royals. None are anywhere near exact in detail.... they are not really meant to fool anyone.
What I would like to know is wether a real royal would have similar dimensions. Would it be about twice as thick in the middle than at the rim? I tried looking the web but couldn't find info on that...
