Hi all. First of all, I suspect this coin be a fake. But if it were not, what date would this cob be made? All I can deduct is a Potosi mint and a king named Philip. (Im even less knowledgable on cobs than I am on milled reales). I think it is a fake because the areas that are 'smooth' are actually higher than lower as one would expect from wear. Thanks for your thoughts.

Late 1580s to early 1590s or so. Style of "3rd Period" assayer B... or the similarly styled assayer A.

The flat areas on cobs are the result of never having been struck up... rather than struck detail being worn away. Typically this occurs on areas (facets) which are slightly lower - thus missing out on the strike which the high areas take the brunt of.

I would actually guess the piece to be genuine. The detail is just about perfectly correct for what it wants to be... and overall has the right look for a hoard find.

What did they price this at as compared to the other obvious fake pieces?

Realeswatcher:
After looking up various similar cobs on the web, I agree with you it looks like an assayer B third period Philip II.

i managed to relocate the little shop where this coin is for sale (Cusco is like a maze to me), and took a few close-up pictures. The owner is asking 1200 Soles ($370). I took one picture of a facet at an angle. Its not very clear on a 2D pic. but the facet hight is the same as the hight of the details adjecent to it. On the close-ups one can see tiny 'bridges' between some dots. Also what looks like cracks. One detail shows 'missing' material on an edge (lower right of the barely discernable letter 'B'). Coin weight is 26.87g.
