I bought this last week as I was looking for an interesting Hadrian denarius for my historical figures collection. Two things make this coin interesting. First is the reverse legend that includes COS DES III. This is a very scarce legend variation. The other interesting thing is the fantastic reverse. It has Aeternitas holding the heads of Sol and Luna in her hands.

Hadrian, AR Denarius AD 135
3.39 g
Obv: IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG
Laur. bust of Hadrian right with light drapery on far shoulder
Rev: AET AVG (in field) P M TR P COS DES III
Aeternitas standing left holding heads of Sol and Luna
Sear 3458 Ric 48

Rarity aside, the portrait of Hadrian is very flattering, and the reverse quite elegant.

Terrific coin!

Is that scarcity just a matter of happenstance over time, or was there something limiting about the inscription and its circumstance in the first place?

I can't tell on the coin which is which, but it is a great image for eternity. Night and day, day and night in endless cycle. What did they know of dark energy, dark matter, and an expanding universe? For that matter, what do we?
Rest in Peace

This legend variation - cos des III - is scarce . Hadrianus was consul in 117 for the first time , in 118 for the second time and in this year he was elected to be consul in 119 for the third time .The tern consul designatus is used to distinguish those who were appointed to fill the office of consul . By this cos des iii we can date the coin in 118 .albert
