Hello Everyone.

I hope you are all having a great weekend so far.

My son and I came across this 1971 Nickel coin roll hunting yesterday. It stood out because of the shine and detail for that particular year and I thought for sure I was going to see an "S" on it when I looked closer, but there is no mint-mark. I did a bit of reading on the no-mintmark Proof error from that year and I wanted to get your opinion on whether or not this might be a proof with no mint-mark. One of the photos has a business strike 2004 nickel next to it for rim comparison because I read that this might be a clue on whether it is a proof or not.

Thanks so much in advance for the help!

Greg

Your coin is a business strike. Proofs that year bear the S mint mark. Also, your coin does not show the typical sharp strike of a proof. A proof has a more squared off rim and a sharper strike.

Thanks so much for the input, John1 and Potbellypub. It's the best dang '71 we have ever found in a roll, so we are still celebrating even though it's not a Proof :). Have a great weekend!
Rest in Peace

The coin may have been dropped. If so both edges of the rim will show that and a flat spot on the edge in that area.

1971 circulation strike from Philadelphia but it sure is a keeper found that nice. The 1971 nickel is usually found with excellent step detail but often found with nicky bag marks. Too bad that rim ding is there. Proof nickels have a different surface to rim characteristic.
I used this image before and it was helpful.

No mintmarks for Phila strikes on obverse until 1980.

Thanks everyone. Here are some pics of the damage/chip. Is that from a drop?

Thanks again.

Note how the rim curves inwards/outwards? So it is PSD. So with the distortion, it couldn't of happened during the strike. It happened after the strike.
