Good eye to spot this difference in thickness. This is kind of interesting. I bet John is ultimately correct, because no doubt circulation to the degree your coin exhibits will flatten and spread design elements. But I also wonder what role the age of the die plays, and/or whether there was a small design change at some point in that year, resulting in thick and thin designs. I doubt that's the case, but it's not 100% impossible, although I've never heard about that being the case for this year. Would be nice if you found examples that were AU or better that showcase these differences. If you ever do, that'll be very interesting, at least to me.

I would probably save this one as an example of a VLDS obverse. While it looks consistent, note the motto. The 'R' gives it away as Die Deterioration.
