More common Large Letters variety. It is a first year issue minted during the US Civil War. This is an AU50 in technical terms. The 'WE' in the obv motto is the high point of the coin, and it is very sharp.

The problem is that the black stuff all over the obv of the coin. It is impossible to know what the coin looks like under the black. It is very likely that the color of the coin differs under the black, and that is the main reason to avoid coins where you cannot see the condition of the surface.

If you have already bought it, I would recommend that you do not remove the black and try to address the small specks of green carefully with someone who knows about conservation. I think the coin has attractive, honest surfaces and would try to stabilize and preserve them as they are now.

looking at this coins overall wear I dont see at XF or even VF regardless of the "WE". the overall wear I'm seeing is not from a weak strike but from quite a bit of circulation.
