- Sorry if this is in the wrong area please move if there's a more appropriate section - I received this e-mail from a potential bidder tonight... "If I won this, rather then mailing, since we both live in Winnipeg. Can we meet and pay cash." My reply was: "I will be honest I'm very new to selling on ebay. I think by ebay rules I have to accept payment via PayPal. But I can easily waive the shipping fees if you want to pick it up" Your opinions?

Danger, Will Robinson! Well, maybe not that bad. There's a chance this buyer is on the up-and-up. I made a reverse offer back when I was selling comic books; the winning bidder was in my hometown. He declined my offer to drop it off. Could have been inconvenient for him (for whatever reason), or just felt "unprofessional".
On your side, I've seen enough horror stories from Craigslist experiences (it doesn't take many) to make me wary of in-person exchanges. If this bidder has low feedback or feels untrustworthy, I wouldn't do it. (Personally, I wouldn't do it anyway because I'm an introvert and I'm doing a transaction, not making friends.) It might save shipping costs, but my time is worth more than deal with coordinating a meeting.

ebay has a section to mark if you offer local pickup, did you? If not, stand on that reason. You didnt offer it. You dont have to justify a reason too anyone. I'm one of Alpha's Craiglist horror stories, I would have been robbed of my sale item if I hadn't had my firearm in my hand under the table at the local Subway, culprit valued his jewels a bit more than mine, so to speak...

Since he bought it through ebay, you will be charged the FV fees regardless. Oh, and ebay rules prohibit attempts to bypass their fees (naturally).

I am not sure how much the shipping fees are...but I would not do it.
The same thing happened to me...and by the way it was a .99 cent auction and the shipping was .99 cents too.
I met him and nothing bad happened. But it was almost 30 minutes driving there, driving back, waiting five of the minutes, having a 5 minute awkward exchange.
If I could do it again I would say, "tell you what, I will ship it, but I will just ship it for free" and I would have refunded him the .99 cents. Was not worth the half hour or aggravation. I would probably do that on 2.95 shipping too. Just not worth it. It happens so seldom, it would be like writing something off in my mind.

I'm certainly not trying to bypass any fees.... Why I figured there would be some trail by sticking to pay pal... that and the buyer would be motivated to actually pick up the item... I've just started selling on ebay so the item is worth under $50 and I figure it will go for much less than that as it's only at $4 and the auction ends in a few hours.. Just wondering if anyone else had ever done a "pick up" before.... from the sounds of it... can be a very scary interaction!!

I've done the pickup thing a few times when it wasn't offered in the listing. Two of those were started by me because the buyers were so close it would be ridiculous and they turned out well.
The third was for a vintage receiver and turntable that sold for about $500 and the buyer requested pickup. I'm glad they did because those are scary to ship and he drove from central OK to East TX to get them. Smooth transactions.
Granted, none of these in my experience were for items under $50.

If there is a legitimate reason for pickup, such as heavy or fragile item, then I would ask them to pay first via Paypal before the pickup. But for a coin? It's an inconvenience. Just tell the person "no" pickup allowed. (State that on your ebay auctions)

As far as paypal evasion I have accepted non-paypal payments in the past and I am under the impression that it is fine within the rules. As far as picking it up. You would want to make clear that you expect them to mark rhe item as delivered, while in your presence on ebay and you will likewise mark it as paid and shipped. If it is a very valuable item, I may be afraid of a robbery. If it is not, I hardly imagine that they would target you. That's just my opinion.

Best policy... do not do it . May all be on the up and up but safe is far better than sorry.

I once sold an old fire department badge (that I got in a local garage sale) to a local buyer. The buyer said they were a police officer, but wanted to meet in a local cemetery. I declined and mailed it - it worked out fine that way.
