Telling new collectors that it's impossible to obtain a mint state coin from circulation is a disservice to the hobby.

I agree,
And, the coin pictured is at least, MS-65 on the obverse but, as you know, we need both sides.

I consider circulation/circulated as a process and MS as a grade. Who else thinks this way?

What we have here is a failure to communicate . ( taken from Cool Hand Luke ).
Hey Butch , looks like we opened a can of worms here . At least John seems to be on our side .
Maybe this will clear things up : If it was found CRH it is NOT Uncirculated !!
However it can have the LOOK of a MS coin , but not be classified as MS-60 to 69.

Okay, I get the reasoning behind calling a coin circulated if one found it in a roll -- if it's ever been outside of a mint-sealed container, you could say that. But as far as grading goes, the term uncirculated has to do with wear, not with its travels. I mean, how could any coin truly be considered properly graded as uncirculated if a person had to handle the coin to grade it? Are only special types of careful handling acceptable? It seems like an awfully thin line, if so.

Here is a screenshot I took with my phone from the PCGS Coin Facts app. I knew I'd seen reference to pulling MS coins from circulation somewhere in there. I'm sure there are more, but this was the first one I came across.

Yea T-Bop, I guess we're "purists" on this issue. I'm halfway tempted to take a couple of my OBW Memorials, say a 1960D small date and a 1963P and dump them in the sorter. That would make them second time around and circulated. You'd have some poor idiot, er, collector in the KC region posting on here and sending in to TPG!

PS: Only "halfway", not totally CRAZY! (yet)
